1800's Underwear

Last year Simplicity came out with two patterns based off the successful (and eye candy filled) Outlander TV show. They were made by American Duchess and have good bones for a less costume-y more historically accurate look. 1700s hasn't been an era of interest to me previously, but I wanted to give it a try!

I joined a FB group called the Historical Sew Fortnightly and the challenge for January was 'First and Lasts'. Figured the undergarments should be made first for my 1700s ensemble, the oh so sexy 1700s knickers.

This was my first time making historical underwear. So there were some challenges.
1.) Pricked my finger about a 1,000 times hand sewing on the corset and had to stop a lot so not to bleed allover the white fabric.
2.) Neck floof, not sure how I feel about it.
3.) Wearing a bum pad......enough said. lol
I love the corset and am proud of how it turned out. I changed the pattern to have spiral lacing and the boning is interestingly enough, zip ties! I am actually amazed at how well the zip tie hack worked for this, they are amazing.

I sewed the back seam together on the corset since the pattern seems to run a size or two larger than ones measurements and it is still slightly large on me. Despite that I like the way it looks with the back sewn up.

Unsure how I feel about the ruffles on the chemise. I feel a little ridiculous in all the floof

The bum pad (yes, it is called a bum pad) is basically a pillow to make it look like baby got back. It is very successful at this, maybe too successful.

I went ahead and made the underskirt for the dress as well in grey. The dress is going to be a grey and white striped number made from an Ikea duvet cover!

Overall, I am glad I made it all the way through these! It was fun to break out of the box a bit on this project.

P.S. Muffin wanted to say that she was a big help. Laying on the fabric as I tried to sew, batting at me while I typed and positioning herself into as many photos as possible.

Cheers!
